Checks continue to be a significant form of payment for consumers at the Point of Sale.
For retailers, significant costs associated with check acceptance originate from deposit preparation, transportation, check clearing fees, return item handling, collection efforts and fraud.
Many of the costs or paper check processing can be reduced through reliance on the electronic systems already available.
Electronic check entry is designed to carry the MICR line data from the source document, the check, including the payer financial institution routing number, account number and check serial number, along with transaction amount and the payee/merchant name.
Upon authorization, the merchant will mark the check “VOID” or other suitable language to prevent duplicate processing.
The check is then handed back to the consumer. The original electronic authorization receipt is provided to the consumer and the merchant retains the copy.
